What I find exceptional, is how many head of cattle and horses Pulaski and Eliza acquired during their short stay in Dry Creek, Sacramento County.
The other fact that I noted is that the probate on Pulaski's estate was finalized in November 1860. I hadn't realized it took so long for the case to be settled, which gives more credence to the story I was told by my cousin Layton Smith of Simcoe Canada:
The story is that Eliza, Frank, and Ida were sailing up the coast of the United States and heard the bombardment of the Fort. The siege of Fort Sumpter began on April 12, 1861. It seems a distinct possibility that the family story is true.
When they landed on the East coast of the United States, they traveled back to Barry Illinois through New York State.
The other part of the story, is that Ann Eliza, Frank and Ida arrived in Barry Illinois on Christmas Day. It was snowing and the wagon probably had "ski type" runners instead of wheels.
While it may seem to our generations, a rather long time to get back to Illinois, the trains could have had - as a priority - moving troops to where they were needed along the railroad lines.
