to the rest home. Didn't get to see her or Harvey. Looking thru the book case I found a copy of Seven American Classics and it has your name in it so will send it to you. It will soon be an antique. Maybe you remember St Anthony falls under the bridge by the depot in Mpls. As I remember it,    it was a roaring falls that dropped straight down for quite a ways. To day it just slopes away and looks nothing like it used to .
My best wishes to you & Hildegard.
Love

Aunt Vest sent the Mpls [Minneapolis] Tribune clipping about Little Falls. Things have changed a little. Saw Catherine - Clifford & Percy. Clifford & Harvey live on the farm but don't work it - just lease it out on shares. Both boys single. Catherine is keeping house for a wealthy family in Mpls. and looks fine. Her husband died a few years ago. Aunt Cindy is in a rest home in Long Lake and in pretty bad shape. Much of the time she doesn't know anybody. Hellen lives next door.

died the next day Aug 8. Uncle Henry didn't feel well enough to go so stayed home. Edgar has a speed boat in Minnetonka inboard job - and we took a ride around the lake. If you haven't had a fast ride - 2800 RPM on a fairly smooth lake you aint missed nuthin. You can get the same jolting on a hi frequency pile driver. It was beautiful weather - saw a lot of lakes & Minnehaha falls and has quite a water fall yet. Aunt Vest is quite feeble and has high blood pressure which doesn't help any. Edna lives less than a block aways and is in quite often

Dear Shirley & Family

At the present I am in the mood to write so here it is.
Came back from Minn in June. Met all the folks back there and they are all busy.
Freeman is still in grocery biz in Litchfield. Carl same in Maple Plain. Ray & Edgar are in excavation - road work foundations and in winter snow plowing on county roads. Lewis is running the farm and doing all right at it. Uncle Henry and Aunt Mattie were there and looked well but Aunt Mattie went to Barry for a trip and [continued]

Mr. And Mrs. Maas Fete Paul Starr at Shower

Miss Dorothy Roushall's fiancĂ©, Paul Starr of Auberry, was given a shower Wednesday evening when his cousin, Mrs. Carol P. Maas, and her husband entertained at a party in their home on McKenzie Avenue. The couple will be married in Reedley tomorrow evening.
Bridge games were played in the garden and refreshments were served. Among those present were: Mr. and Mrs. C. Elvan Cobb, Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Andrews; Misses Betty Maxwell, Patricia Rogers, Roushall and Lillian Baldwin; Messrs, Phillip Andrews, Richard Byrd and Slasson Vlau.

This is a write up about Grandma Hildegarde's son, Paul, and a party for the couple prior to their wedding. I don't see anything about Grandma being there.

There is a phrase that says something like "the last survivor writes the story". Well I could add a few things here about Dorothy but I am trying to be polite.........

Miss Roushall, Paul Starr Are Married
Miss Dorothy Roushall and Paul Starr of Auberry were married at a ceremony conducted last evening in the Church of the Good Shepherd in Reedley.
Reb. Arthur L. Walters officiated at the rites. Incidental music was played by Joel Smith. Preceding the marriage James Fairweather of Los Angeles, a cousin of the bride, played solo selections on a muted cornet. The former Miss Roushall was given in marriage by her father, J. Roushall of Reedley.
Floor length dirndl styled gowns were worn by the bride and her attendants, Mrs. G. Allen Cherry and Miss Jane Olson, the former dressed in powder blue and the latter in delicate pink. Both are Omega Xi Omicron Sorority sisters of Mrs. Starr.
An all white starched lace gown over white satin was chosen by the bride. It had a crossed bodice shirred in a bouffant skirt, and short sleeves shirred at the shoulder. With this she wore a shoulder length veil caught to a stiffened lace heart shaped coronet, and carried a French bouquet of gardenias and lilies of the valley.]
Mrs. Cherry and Miss Olson's frocks were designed of starched lace  over taffeta shirred at the waist and at the shoulders. The skirts were full and the bodices, which were shirred down the front were clipped at each side with pearled ornaments. They carried field flower bouquet of carnations, bachelor buttons and sweet peas, and were small clusters of these flowers in their hair.
Phillip Andrews, a cousin of the bridegroom, was the best man, and Kermit Koontz, Harry Andrews and S. D. Hardison of Reedley were the ushers.
Members of the bridal party and (Continued On Page 6-A)

relatives later gather in the garden of the Roushall home, where refreshments were served. Miss Catherine Walton of Sanger and Evelyn Hardison of Reedley, cousins of the bride, assisted in service.
Mrs. Roushall and Mrs. Hugh Linthieum of Sacramento, mothers of the newlyweds, received the guests, the former dressed in old rose hued lace and the latter in a blue sheer gown. Each wore a gardenia corsage.
The couple left later last night for Southern California, where Starr will do post graduate work at the University of Southern California. They will return here at the end of six weeks for a short visit before school opens at Auberry, where Starr is employed as assistant coach at the Sierra Union High School.
The former Miss Roushall is a niece of Mrs. Esley H. Walton, at whose Sanger home she announced her betrothal. She was graduated from the Reedley High School and the Reedley Junior College before coming to the Fresno State College, from which she was graduated last year. During the past year she has been employed in the Sanger schools.

Starr also resided in Fresno while taking post graduate work at the local college. He made his home here with an uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. Andrews, the latter his mother's sister. M. L. Starr of Cody Wyo., is his father.
The bridegroom came to the Pacific Coast from Wyoming, where he was graduated from the Cody High School. He attended Stanford University and was graduated from the University of Oregon, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. Starr has coached at Auberry for the past year.

I think that Mrs. Hugh Linthieum, is actually Grandma Hildegarde. This makes me wonder if she was married 4 times not 3! I wish she would come back sometime and let me know!

Star-Roushall Engagement Announced At Sanger Party
Miss Dorothy Roushall is another Fresno State College Omega Xi Omicron alumna who will become a June bride this year. She has announced her betrothal to Paul Starr of Auberry, who is also a former Fresno State College student.
The bride elect made know her engagement at a party given yesterday in the Sanger home of her aunt, Mrs. E. H. Walton, where she entertained for more than a score of guests.
Tiny scrolls bearing the names of the couple were found under the arms of miniature snowmen, used to center the card tables from which, a dessert course was served. The motif of Winter was carried out in the decoration of the rooms, where bridge games later were played.
Miss Roushall is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Roushall of Reedley, where she was graduated from high school and the Reedley Junior College. After leaving the city she studied at Fresno State College, where she was a member of the Omega Xi Omicron Sorority, and since her graduation here she was been employed in the Sanger schools. She was two younger brothers, Wesley and Ronald Roushall both of Reedley.
The prospective bridegroom resided in Fresno while taking post graduate work at the local college. He made his home here with an uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. Andrews. He is the son Mrs. H. Starr of Sacramento and of M. L. Starr of Cody, Wyo.

He attended Standford University and was graduated from the University of Oregon, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. Starr now is employed as a coach at Sierra Union High School at Auberry.
Mis Roushall was assisted in entertaining by Mrs. Walton and her mother, Mrs. Roushall. Among those present were Mesdames G.

Rippey Family - Grace Hortense Rippey Triplett Death Record - page 10

This is my grandfather Shirley "Tripp" Triplett's first wife, Grace. I do not know when Grace started to have signs and or symptoms of an intestinal obstruction in early July 1924. I do not know if the family was in Madera or maybe visiting relatives in Southern California.

She entered Cottage Hospital in Burbank California on July 6th, 1924. She then endured a surgical procedure on the 7th July 1924.

Grace passed away on 7 July 1924 at 5:30p.m. The cause of her death is labeled as "Acute Intestinal Obstruction", and that she suffered from this for 4 days.

Grace was buried in Rosedale Cemetery in Burbank California. The Cemetery is "very historic" in the Los Angeles area. The grass is overgrown and the office was not open on weekends. There are still burials going on there. Graves have been placed perpendicular between the rows of graves.

Brian and I walked much of the cemetery and could not find her burial site.

The cemetery is in downtown Los Angeles - one of the worse parts of town. The traffic was horrible getting there and back to Santa Anna in January 2020! I think it's always bumper to bumper.....

Triplett Family - Shirley Greene Triplett family picture - page 9

I believe that this picture was taken of Grace Hortense Rippey Triplett, my Grandfather, Shirley Green Triplett who is holding their daughter Shirley Cora Triplett, who was also known in our family as "Little Shirley". I believe that this picture was taken in 1914 - 1915. I do not know where this picture was taken-possibly either in Madera or Burbank California.

This is the 1920 census showing Grandpa, Grace, and "Little" Shirley in Madera, Madera, California. Also living with them are two cousins, Irene and Vera [I think on the Triplett side].

The house is located at 112 South N Street They were the 95th dwelling, and the 100th family that the enumerator interviewed that day.

Shirley Triplett is the head of the household. He owns the house which has a mortgage. He is a married white male who is 30 years old. He is not attending school, and can read and write. Shirley states that he was born in Minnesota, his father was born in Illinois, and his mother was born in California. He speaks English. His occupation is an Electrition, and works in the auto industry. He is not an employer, but a worker.

Grace is his wife, who is a white, married, female who is 29 years old. She can read and write English. She was born in Colorado. Both of her parents were born in Illinois. She is not employed.

Shirley is his daughter. She is a white 6 year old female, who is single. She is not attending school. She was born in California.

Irene is the next person in the same household. She is Shirley's [Grandpa's] cousin, who is a  white, single, female who is 9 years old. She attends school. Irene was born in California, and both of her parents were born in Illinois. She is not employed.

Vera is the next person in the same household. She is Shirley's [Grandpa's] cousin, who is a white, single, female who is 7 years old. She is attending school. Vera was born in California, and both of her parents were born in Illinois. She is not employed.

Rippey Family - Rippey Triplett picture - Page 4

I had seen this photo in the past and didn't realize who these other people probably are. I believe that the lady on the left upper row is Grace's mother Cora Shields Bills Rippey.
The man to Cora's left was Clyde Lester Rippey, Grace's elder brother.
I believe that the younger man was Grace's younger brother Charles Mahlon Rippey.
I think the man at the top right row might be Harry Triplett.

Triplett Family - Shirley Cora Triplett - page 1

Grace and Grandpa had a daughter named Shirley Cora Triplett. I do not know if Little Shirley was autistic or had suffered brain damage during her birth. I do know that Grandpa had to institutionalize her through the State of California in the 1930's. She was enumerated in the 1940 census, living with Grandpa's parents, Lewis and Ida, in Burbank, Los Angeles County, California.  She lived at a "residence" in Lodi California, not far from where her Grandmother Ida Greene Triplett was born.
I have only 2 pictures of Little Shirley. This picture is when she is older than the other.

Rippey Family - 1900 Rippey Family Census - Grace Hortense Rippey - Page 3

This is the 1900 census for Cripple Creek, Teller County, Colorado. These families were enumerated on the 14th of June 1900. The Rippey family has been enumerated again (10 days later) in 1900. I have never seen this in one of our families ever before. I have heard of this being found by others. But this is a first for me!
The family starts on line 78 with the head of the household, who is William Rippey. [All relationship entries in the household enumeration refer back to the Head of the household.] William is a white married male, who was born in August of 1858. He is 41 years of age, and has been married for 20 years. He was born in Illinois. His father was born in Kentucky, and his mother was born in Ohio. His occupation is "miner". He does not go to school. William can read, write, and speak English. He owns his home, with a mortgage.
Cora F. is next. She is a white, married female (for 20 years), who was born in Oct 1860, so is 39 years old. On this census she says that she has been pregnant 3 times, and has 3 children. She was born in Illinois. Her father was born in New York and her mother was born in Ohio. She can read, write, and speak English. He was born in Missouri, and his parents were born in Illinois. He reads, writes, and speaks English.
Clyde is on line 80. He is William's son. He is a white, unmarried male, who was born in June 1890, so he is 17 years old. He was born in Missouri, and his parents were born in Illinoi. He reads, writes and speaks English.
Grace is on line 81. She is William's daughter. She is a white, unmarried female, who was born in June 1890, so she is 9 or10 years old. [I think she is 10 years old as her birthday is/was June 6.] She is single. She was born in Colorado, and her parents were born in Illinois. She writes, reads, and speaks English.
Charlie is enumerated on Line 82. He is William's son. He is a white, unmarried male, who was born in Feb 1892. so he is 8 years old. He was born in Colorado, and his parents were born in Illinois. He writes, reads, and speaks English.

Rippey Family - 1900 Rippey Family Census - Grace Hortense Rippey - page 1

Grandpa and Grace were cousins through her mother's side, in the "Bills" family line.

Grace was born in Colorado in 1890. Her parents, William E. Rippey and Cora Shields Bills were both born in Illinois. They were married in Pike County Illinois.
After William and Cora were married in 1880, they moved to Missouri where their first child Clyde was born in 1882. The family then moved to Colorado. Grace was born in 1890, and her younger brother Charles was born in 1892.
In the 1900 census, on June 4th, the family was enumerated in Berkeley Town, Arapahoe County Colorado. Grace's mother is counted on the first page. The address of the home I s 229 Park Ave. The family was the 22nd house and the 25th family visited by the enumerator that day. Cora S. Rippey is listed as the head of the household. She is a white female and was born in October 1860. She is 39 years old, and has been married for 19 years. She has been pregnant 5 times and 3 of her children are alive. Triplett Family - Lewis Triplett - page 4

Grandpa's father Lewis was a finish carpenter and contractor in Little Falls. He built the most beautiful Episcopal Church that is still in use today. This picture is from our Summer of 2012 Family History Tour. I didn't think to call ahead to see if someone would be there to let us in. I love the red door!

This is a newspaper clipping about the day the church was consecrated.
WITH SOLEMN SERVICE
New Church of Our Savior Dedicated Wednesday
The handsome new church of our Savior was dedicated Wednesday morning with the impressive ceremonies of the Episcopal church.

Rt. Rev. J. D. Morrison, D> D., L., the following clergymen, took part: Rev. F. E. Allelyne, rector of the local parish; Rev. C. Herbert Shutt, St. Peter's church, St. Paul; Rev Wm. Watson, Wahpeton, N.D.; Rev Geo. Barnes, Alexandria; Rev. F. Parshall, St. Cond [Cloud]; Rev. E. S. Murphy, Wadena; and Rev. W. T. Moody, Brainerd.

After the processional hymn the verses of the 24th psalm was read by the bishop and people, alternatively. Prayer by the bishop followed, after which Bishop Morrison, preceded by the rector, went to the places in the church to be blessed, beginning with the font. After the Lord's prayer the bishop renounced the dedication gave his benediction. After singing by the choir the choral celebration of the Holy Eucharist followed, with Rev. Alleyne as celebrant. After reading of the Epistle and gospel and a hymn by the choir. Bishop Morrison reached the dedicatory sermon, taking his text from Genesis:

"How dreadful is this place; this is none other than the house of God and this is the gate of heaven.

"And Jacob rose up early in the morning and took the stone that he had put for his pillow, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.

"And he called the name of that place Bethel."

The eloquent instructive and illuminating sermon of the bishop all turned on the main idea that the new structure was the house of God. Congratulations to the rector and congregation were given and their efforts praised. The bishop explained to some extent the form and method of worship in the church, expressed hope for the future and admonished the congregation to continue with the work so auspiciously begun.

The services closed with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist.

There was a large attendance at the services both morning and evening. In the evening Rev C. Herbert Shutt, Rev. Wm. Watson and Rev. H. F. Parshall made the addresses.

Rev. Shutt congratulated the congregation on its great achievement in building such a splendid edifice, one worthy of a larger place. He said the work was just commenced, that more and appropriate opportunities for labor would come. He took up the position of the church and amid problems were before it, which the congregation must help to solve. Rev. Watson's address was a description and a reminder, a description of the symbolic nature of the church building and a reminder of its [?]. He rejoiced with the rector and congregation on the structure errected to the glory of God. In his address Rev. Parshall made a glowing and merited eulogy of Rev. Alleyne, saying that the erection of the church was due to the energy, enterprise, good will, and the churchmanship of the local rector. He congratulated the people on their church and more on their rector.

He made a plea for tolerance, for less bitterness and bickering between denominations.

The new church is in the Queen Anne style, eighty-six feet in depth, thirty-eight feet wide in the nave and fifty-six feet wide in the chancel. The walls for twelve feet are of granite boulders with black mortar, above group with wooden panels. A heavy trussed roof surmounts this. The belfry in the northeast corner is of granite boulders. The structure is a very handsome one.

The nave is finished in weathered oak and will seat 300. The walls are kalsomined and frescoed in gold, and the roof is finished in cathedral style. There is a chancel for the vested choir. The altar was given by Mrs. Hubert Root, in memory of her late husband, who was rector here from 1876 to 1880. It is nine feet long, with tabernacle and reredos fifteen feet in height.

The windows deserve special notice. The large east window, "Christ blessing little children," was given in memory of the late Martha W. Tanner by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tanner, and Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Davidson.

Of the three smaller memorial windows on the south side, one, "The Good Samaritan," was presented by traveling men;" Christ knocking at the door" by the choir in memory of Bishop Whipple; "Angel guarding a cross" by Mr. and Mrs. T. O. Gordon in memory of Mrs. Gordon's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Stillwell. The vesper lights were given by the rector, in memory of his father, the late Colonel Alexander Alleyne.

The basement is yet unfinished. It will be fitted for a gymnasium. The total cost of the church when completed, will be nearly $10.000.

The cornerstone was laid Sept. 16th, and in spite of non-arrival of material and bad weather Contractor Lewis Triplett completed the work within reasonable time.

More than anyone, the energetic and popular rector of the Episcopal parish deserves congratulation, for to his enterprise, energy and work is due the beautiful building which is one of the finest structures of the kind in the city. He was well supported in his labors by the congregation.

Triplett Family - Shirley Greene Triplett - page 5 - Working for Santa Fe Railroad

These are 2 items that my Grandfather Shirley Greene Triplett - aka "Tripp" - carried with him or used while working for Santa Fe in and around 1910. This knife was made by an old "Mexican" woman close to Barstow California. Brian was going to get a pouch for it made, but the person who made leather goods is no longer in business.

This leather pouch is from the same time that the knife was being used. There are 7 keys that fit into the lock. We think that the lock is "frozen" and would need to be taken apart and thoroughly cleaned. I used to play with them.

Triplett Family - Shirley Greene Triplett - page 4 - Moving from Minnesota

Sometime before 1909, Lewis packed up the family and moved them to Southern California after first staying in Stockton California.

I do not know if Lewis was "taken" by the idea of helping California rebuild following the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. The family ended up in Burbank, Los Angeles County California between 1909 and 1910.

I have been told that land was plentiful and cheap in California, and Lewis was able to build houses. One of the things that Grandpa did do in California was to go to the San Francisco World Fair. I can't remember much that he would say about it, but I do know that he went.

He worked for the Santa Fe Railroad in the Mojave Desert. This was before, during and after WW1. The only reason that I know that is because he said that when the news came that the United States had entered the war, the men on the gang wanted to enlist. They were told that they were exempt from service, because they worked for the railroad, and that their service was vital to the defense of the country. So they all went back to work.

We have Grandpa's knife he had made for him by an old Indian lady in the Mojave Desert. Brian remembered me telling him this.

In my green safe, I have an old railroad lock and a leather bag of keys, and the knife, that was Grandpa's. I've had the keys for decades and remember playing with them when I was little. I didn't find the lock until after Grandpa died. One of the keys fit, but the lock won't open. Apparently there is too much rust inside. Maybe a locksmith would help.

There is also a pink railroad lamp in the garage that Grandpa painted sometime in the 1950's or 60's. He also painted the fence surrounding the house on Illinois Street, and the bench around the very large Walnut tree in their back yard, in Fresno the same color pink!

Lewis built their home by homesteading it in Burbank.

Grandpa often talked about growing up in Minnesota and how it would snow.

He would say that they didn't have skis as we know them. All the kids would do is tie barrel staves to their feet and glide down the hills. He also said they didn't us ski poles. I guess they were better at skiing than I was

My grandfather also talked about the time that a friend of the family, who was a Doctor at the Stillwater State Prison, brought one of the Younger Gang brothers to Little Falls. Grandpa was probably at least 10 years old. Jim and Cole were the only ones still alive at that time. Younger had just been released from the prison.

The James -Younger Gang had attempted to rob the Northfield Bank in Northfield Minnesota. In the process they murdered a bank employee. The Youngers were captured south of La Salle Minnesota. Cole and Jim were sentenced to life and sent to Stillwater. They received pardons from the Governor of Minnesota.

At one point during the Doctor and Younger's visit to Little Falls, they noticed a fort that Grandpa and his friends were building of wood and blankets. The fort was on a vacant lot across from Grandpa's house. Younger was passing by, stopped, and watched them. He commented that their fort reminded him of the times that he and his brothers were out west roughing it. Grandpa couldn't remember what else Younger said after that.

This is a picture of where the Tripletts lived. It is still at 8th and Broadway in Little Falls.

When Grandpa died in 1982, his cousin had come to visit family in Madera. Unfortunately, he didn't get to see Grandpa again, but I got to talk with him a little after the funeral. He talked about the time when "Shirley" was about 17, and he was younger, and how they stole apples. Apparently a group of them were riding in a wagon. There was an apple orchard nearby, so Grandpa and his cousin climbed the fence and took a few. The old lady who owned the orchard, saw them and started to yell and chase them out of her orchard. Grandpa apparently thought it was great fun, but his cousin said he himself was scared to death! There was a great deal of family resemblance between Grandpa and his cousin.

Triplett Family - Shirley Greene Triplett Birth Record and Pictures - page 1

Grandpa

My grandfather was Shirley Greene Triplett, who was born on the 16th of December, 1889. He was born in his home in the small town of Little Falls, in Morrison County, Minnesota. Shirley at that time was an acceptable name for men, as was Audre and Carroll. It is possible he was named for his mother's brother Shirley, who had died in infancy.
The name "Greene" was his mother's maiden name. He used to tell me that he remembered the day he was born. He said that it was snowing, and he wasn't allowed out to play in the snow. His parents names were Lewis Triplett and Ida Greene Triplett. He had one brother named Harry who was born in 1891.
This is a picture of my Grandpa - on the left -  and his brother Harry, on the right. You can tell they are both boys the way their hair is parted on the left side of the their heads. Girl's hair were parted in the middle.

One thing that I remember is that the boys always ate ahead of their parents. The parents ate meals by themselves. It was also a household where "children are to be seen and not heard"!

This is a picture of my Grandfather's Aunt Vesta Triplett Murchy. Again, you can tell Grandpa is a boy by the part of his hair. Little boys wore dresses until they were potty trained. It was easier to change the diapers with a dress instead of pants.
