Once there, you can have a free account. The LDS church will not proselytize you or contact you in any way.
Once you have signed in hit the "Family Tree tab". Search for overview and it will help you sign in and find people. You will start a small tree either with yourself [live people are not shown if you haven't entered them into the family tree], or a deceased direct line person who has passed. You can also search through the "Person" tab to the right of the Overview tab.
The tree below is the Walkinshaw par of the Universal Family Tree at FamilySearch.org. I have put in most of the people in the t2 or 3 generations from Helen Walkinshaw back.
